5 Tips for Bringing Senior Loved Ones To A Graduation Ceremony

Graduation-Cap-Hat-LR.jpgIt's almost graduation time, and many students are about to celebrate one of the most important milestones of their lives. There's no reason for elderly loved ones to miss the graduation ceremony, but taking a few simple steps can make traveling to a graduation safe and fun for everyone.

1. Plan ahead. Take the time to look at a map of the ceremony venue, or call the school or venue to familiarize yourself with accessible entrances, parking, bathroom locations, and exits. If there's not assigned seating, try to pick a section beforehand with easy bathroom and exit access.

2. Check out the weather. Weather conditions in May can vary widely, from cold and rainy to overwhelmingly hot. Check the forecast for your location and plan accordingly - bring extra layers for your loved one, or a sun hat.

3. Stay hydrated. Even if the weather isn't very hot, seniors need to be extra careful to stay hydrated during a long ceremony, and drinking fountains or food vendors might not be conveniently located. If allowed, bring an insulated water bottle to keep water cool.

4. Don't forget necessities. Make sure your loved one's key items are packed well in advance, and check that everything is in the bag the day of the event. Medications are especially important, along with any medical IDs or instructions.

5. Have enough help on hand. Will immediate family members be busy taking photos, connecting with other parents, and soaking in the special moments of their child's big day? You may want to have an extra caregiver come along, if allowed, so that your senior family member always has someone looking out for them at the graduation ceremony.
